More about LED panels

An LED panel is a flat plane of light that lights a whole room evenly, without the patches of shadow you get from separate spots. That is why you find them in offices, treatment rooms, shops, warehouses and increasingly in a kitchen or study at home. We carry two sizes: the square panel of 60 x 60 cm that drops into a standard grid ceiling, and the long panel of 120 x 30 cm for above a worktop, a corridor or a reception desk. Both are 30 watts and give over 4000 lumens.

Nova 60x60: little glare for workstations

The Nova panel has a louvre shield with a UGR below 16. That figure says how much light falls directly into your eyes: below 19 you may light a workstation with it, below 16 is exceptionally low. Comfortable above a desk, a reception or a meeting table where people sit for hours. 30 watts, 4200 lumens, 595 x 595 mm and only 18 mm thick. You choose between the dimmable version and the version with a Philips driver, which does not dim but is nine euro cheaper.

Europa 120x30: long and back-lit

The Europa panel is back-lit: the LEDs sit behind the diffuser rather than along the edge, so the surface lights up evenly with no brighter edges. 30 watts, 4050 lumens, 1195 x 295 x 34 mm. Here too you choose between dimmable and non-dimmable; for a store room, garage or workshop where the light simply goes on or off, the non-dimmable version is the logical choice.

You set the colour temperature yourself

All panels have a CCT switch with five settings, from 3000K warm white to 6000K daylight. So you decide during installation whether it becomes living room light or work light, and you can change it later. For an office or practice 4000K is the usual choice, for home 3000K.

Recessed or surface mounted

In a grid ceiling you simply lay the panel into the grid. If you have no suspended ceiling, you screw a surface mounting frame to the ceiling or the wall and clip the panel into it. There is a frame for 60 x 60 cm and for 120 x 30 cm, in white or black, with fixings included.

Also called a ceiling panel or light panel

An LED panel is also known as a ceiling panel, light panel or grid ceiling lighting. Other English terms are LED panel light, flat panel and troffer. All the same thing: a thin, flat fixture with an even plane of light.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 60x60 LED panel fit my grid ceiling?

Yes. A standard grid ceiling has a 600 x 600 mm grid and the Nova panel measures 595 x 595 mm, so it drops straight in. At 18 mm thick it also fits above the grid where there is little room.

How many LED panels do I need?

For an office or workspace, count on about 500 lux on the working plane. One panel of 4200 lumens then covers roughly 6 to 8 square metres, depending on the ceiling height and the colour of the walls. For a corridor or store room it can be half that.

What does UGR below 16 mean?

UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating and measures glare. The lower it is, the less of the light reaches your eyes directly. For screen work UGR 19 counts as the limit; at UGR below 16 the Nova panel sits comfortably under it.

Are the panels dimmable?

Both sizes come in a dimmable and a non-dimmable version. The dimmable version works with a leading edge dimmer; which dimmer suits is explained in the dimmer guide.

How long does an LED panel last?

The expected lifespan is 50,000 burning hours. At eight hours a day, five days a week, that is over twenty years. All panels come with 5 years of warranty.
