More about Recessed spotlights bathroom

In a bathroom, the IP rating is what matters. All spotlights on this page have an IP65 rating on the front: resistant to jet water, making them suitable directly above a shower or bath. If you want warmer light as you dim, the Warmo is the exception in this range. This makes it the safest choice for your home, and also the range you can use outdoors under a canopy.

Which IP rating where

Roughly: in a living room or bedroom, IP20 is sufficient. For a bathroom outside the direct splash zone, IP44 is the minimum. Above a bath, shower, or in a laundry room, IP65 is required. If in doubt, choose IP65 – the price difference is small, and you'll never have to worry about it again.

The driver is not waterproof

This is most often overlooked. For almost every recessed spot, the IP rating applies only to the front: the side you see from the bathroom. The back and the separate driver are IP20 and should be kept dry above the ceiling. So, do not place the driver in a cove where condensation can collect.

Setting light colour after installation

Most of the spotlights here have a CCT switch, such as the Lesto, Lyvo, and Marlo: a slider on the fixture that allows you to choose 2700K, 3000K, or 4000K before installation. In a bathroom, 3000K usually works best – warm enough not to be startling in the morning, yet white enough for shaving or applying makeup. Guessed wrong? Click the spot out, move the slider, click it back in.

Dimming

All spotlights with integrated LED in this category are Triac-dimmable and come with a dimmable driver. Please note that this refers to leading edge dimming: not every wall dimmer can handle this.

Frequently asked questions

Can a recessed spotlight be placed directly above the shower?

Yes, if it has an IP65 rating on the front. Ensure the driver is dry above the ceiling and, if in doubt, have the connection checked by an installer.

What is the difference between IP44 and IP65?

The second digit refers to water protection. IP44 is protected against splashing water from all directions; IP65 is protected against water jets. For a washbasin or mirror wall, IP44 is sufficient; above a bath and shower, use IP65.

Do these spotlights not fog up from steam?

Not with a good seal around the edge. If a spotlight does fog up, it means there is air and vapor exchange between the ceiling and the spotlight; this can be resolved by applying sealant around the edge, not by using a different spotlight.

Can I also use these spotlights outdoors?

Under a canopy or in a carport ceiling, IP65 is perfectly fine, provided the spotlight is not exposed to rain and the driver remains dry. For full outdoor exposure, a spotlight with an IP rating across the entire housing is required.
