More about Dimmable recessed spotlights

All recessed spotlights on this page are dimmable, and for models with integrated LED, the dimmable driver is included. There's one thing you need to know before buying a dimmer: our spotlights work on leading edge phase control, also known as triac or leading edge. A dimmer that only does trailing edge phase control will cause flickering or won't work at all.

Which dimmer works

Look for triac or leading edge in the dimmer's specifications. The same manufacturer often offers both variants under almost the same name, so check the model number. Our own Triac dimmers are designed for this and start at 0.5 watts, so even a single 5-watt spotlight dims smoothly.

Pay attention to the minimum load

This is the most common cause of flickering. Many wall dimmers have a lower limit of 10 or 20 watts. If you connect three 5-watt LED spotlights, you'll be at 15 watts and it will just work; two spotlights and you'll be below the limit. Always add up what is actually connected and compare that with the dimmer's minimum.

Dim2Warm: warmer light as you dim

A standard LED spotlight maintains the same light colour, no matter how much you dim it. With Dim2Warm, the colour changes along with the dimming: from 3000K at full power to 2000K at the lowest setting, just like an incandescent bulb did. In a dining area or lounge area, this is the difference between dimmed and cozy. The Warmo, Vigo, and the Dim2Warm version of the Cavo can do this.

Why don't they turn off completely?

At the lowest setting, LED almost always leaves a residual glow. This is not a defect: the driver needs a minimum to keep operating. If you want true darkness, use the switch, not the dimmer.

Frequently asked questions

How many spotlights can I connect to one dimmer?

Divide the dimmer's maximum by the power per spotlight and allow for some margin. Our 250W dimmer can accommodate over forty 6-watt spotlights; the practical limit is more about what's allowed on a single circuit.

Can I also change the light colour with the dimmer?

No, except with Dim2Warm. The CCT switch is a slider on the driver that you set before installation; the dimmer only controls how brightly the spotlight shines.

Does a smart dimmer also work?

Yes, provided the module supports leading edge phase control. Check this per model, as the same manufacturer often supplies both variants. We don't sell smart dimmers ourselves, so you are free to choose the brand.

My spotlights flicker at a low setting

Almost always due to the dimmer's minimum load, or a trailing edge dimmer. Add another spotlight or replace the dimmer with a triac model.
