More about Shallow-depth recessed spotlights

Not every ceiling has space. Above a plasterboard against concrete, there might only be three centimeters, and in a cove or a lowered section around pipework, even less. The spotlights on this page all have an recess depth of 28 mm or less — the shallowest comes in at 14 mm.

Measure first, then order

Drill a test hole in an inconspicuous spot and insert a piece of wire until you feel resistance. That is the actual space you have. Do not include the driver in this calculation: you place it next to the spot, not behind it, so it doesn't count towards the recess depth.

What fits in the assortment

The shallowest is the Nivo Mini with 14 mm, intended for a cabinet or niche and operating on 12V. Next is the Rendo with 23 mm — remarkable, as that is a GU10 fitting, and these normally build 38 to 39 mm. Most are around 25 to 28 mm: the Cavo at 25 mm, the Lesto at 26 mm, the Lyvo and Warmo at 27 mm, and the Marlo and Vigo at 28 mm with a saw cut of only Ø55 mm.

Where the driver should go

The driver is separate and also needs space itself — count on a block of a few centimeters. Place it flat next to the spot, accessible through the saw hole, and not clamped between insulation. If something ever breaks, it is usually the driver, and you want to be able to remove it without breaking open the ceiling.

Insulation and heat

Keep the space above the spotlight clear. LED does not get glowing hot, but warm enough that insulation should not be tight against it. If you're stuck, look for a fixture that is explicitly stated as insulation-covering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do I minimally need?

The recess depth of the spot plus some play to be able to tilt it in. With 26 mm recess depth, three centimeters of space will suffice; with less, clicking it in becomes difficult.

Does the driver count towards the recess depth?

No. The driver lies next to the spot above the ceiling, not behind it. However, it does need space somewhere, so it won't work without any space at all.

Can I use these spotlights in a concrete ceiling?

Drilling directly into concrete for a recessed spot is not a feasible option. These spotlights are intended for the plasterboard ceiling you hang below the concrete — precisely where space is tight.

Are shallow spotlights less bright?

Not necessarily. The Lesto reaches up to 400 lumens at 26 mm and the Lyvo up to 700 lumens at 27 mm. What you do compromise on is choice: the shallower, the smaller the offering.
