Can you replace an integrated LED?

Kun je een geïntegreerde led vervangen?

No, not separately. With an integrated LED the light source is fixed inside the fixture and is not sold as a loose lamp. If it gives out, you replace the whole fixture. That sounds worse than it is, because these fixtures generally last far longer than the lamp you would have screwed into them.

Why manufacturers build them this way

Without a separate socket a fixture can be much flatter. That is exactly why our Lyvo and Warmo need only 27 mm of recessed depth: there is no room required for a lamp base.

On top of that, the manufacturer can match the LED, the optics and the driver to each other. That yields functions a loose lamp cannot offer, such as the CCT switch on the Lesto or the Dim2Warm behavior of the Vigo, which drops from 3000K to 2000K as you dim.

Usually the driver has failed, not the LED

This is the good news. An LED rarely dies all at once; it gets slowly weaker over thousands of hours. What does break is the electronics in front of it.

If your spot comes with a separate driver, that is a block above the ceiling you can replace on its own. The Lesto 5W in silver and chrome come with a separate Triac dimmable driver in the box. If one spot goes dark while the rest keep burning, check that block before you throw the fixture away.

With a loop-through driver, as on the Lesto 5W in black, several spots drop out at once when the driver fails. That is your diagnosis right there.

How long do they last?

That is listed per product and varies considerably:

Almost every product in the catalog sits at 50,000 hours. Burn a spot three hours a day and that is well over forty years. With a GU10 lamp you buy yourself, you would go through several lamps in that same period.

Do note what that 50,000 hours means. It is not the moment the spot goes out, but the point at which it still gives a certain percentage of its original light output. An LED weakens slowly, and you only notice when you hang it next to a new one.

When GU10 is the better choice

On one point a separate socket wins: you can change your mind. If you do not like the light color, with GU10 you screw in a different lamp. With an integrated LED that is only possible if it has a CCT switch — and then you still have to take the spot out of the ceiling.

If it sits somewhere hard to reach, integrated is actually the right call — but take one with a long life. That is exactly why the Ferro at 54,000 hours is worth its price above a ceiling you cannot easily get to.

Replacing usually works through the existing hole

If the fixture does have to come out, it is rarely a big job. As long as the new cut-out size is the same or slightly larger, you swap it through the existing hole. Spots with a range are the handiest for this: the Lesto and Lyvo fit Ø68-75 mm, the Ferro even Ø50-70 mm.

Switch off the circuit at the fuse box, pull the spot down and disconnect. More on this in Can you replace recessed spotlights without opening up the ceiling? The range is with the recessed spotlights.

Can you take the LED out of a recessed spotlight?

Not with an integrated LED: it is fixed and not sold separately. With a GU10 fixture you can, because that holds a loose lamp.

Does an integrated LED break sooner?

No, usually later. Our integrated spots are rated at 15,000 to 54,000 hours, with 50,000 hours the most common figure.

One spot has stopped working, do I have to replace them all?

Check the driver first. With a separate driver per spot, that block is often the cause and can be replaced on its own.
